Growing season kicks off in Scott County with a plant sale and gardening classes

GATE CITY — Gardeners in Scott County will have a busy week ahead when Master Gardenersl host a plant sale on Saturday and the Scott County Extension Office will offer a raised bed gardening class on Tuesday.

First up will be the Master Gardener plant sale taking place on May 6. The sale will be held at Natural Tunnel State Park and will begin at 9 a.m.

“Master Gardeners will be on hand to help participants choose from a variety of vegetables, herbs, flowers and to offer gardening tips,” a press release stated. “Proceeds from the plant sale will be used to support education programming throughout the year.”

Later that week, the Scott County Extension Office will host raised bed gardening classes in Duffield and Nickelsville. The SCEO, in cooperation with the Virginia Department of Health, received a grant to construct two raised bed gardens in two locations in the county.

The first class will be held on May 9 at HOPE Christian Ministries located at 321 Mechanic St. in Duffield at 4 p.m.

The next class will be at Nickelsville Town Hall located at 11826 Nickelsville Highway at 4 p.m.

Garden spaces are available for those who do not have the space, tools or money. The areas are free and available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Elevated bed will also be available for those not able to bend over or kneel.
