Take a birthday run with Girls on the Run of NET

Staff reports • Apr 20, 2017 at 4:30 PM

Girls on the Run of Northeast Tennessee is celebrating its 10th birthday in the Tri-Cities.

And you're all invited to join them for a birthday run.

The Girls on the Run of Northeast Tennessee Spring 5K will be held Saturday, May 6, at Southside Elementary School in Johnson City. Registration for the annual event is now open.

The program, which began in the area in 2007, is a physical activity-based, positive youth development program that inspires girls in grades 3 through 8 to be joyful, healthy and confident.

“We are so excited to be celebrating 10 years of Girls on the Run,” said Ani Boyd, co-director of Girls on the Run of Northeast Tennessee. “Our Spring 5K allows us to not only celebrate all the girls have accomplished over the season, but to also celebrate our birthday with the community at large. We have some fun things planned for both the participants and by-standers.”

This celebratory, non-competitive 5K event on May 6 is the culminating experience of the curriculum. Completing the 5K gives the girls a tangible understanding of the confidence that comes through accomplishment as well as a framework for setting and achieving life goals. Crossing the finish line is a defining moment when the girls realize that even the seemingly impossible IS possible.

Those interested in registering should visit the Girls on the Run of Northeast Tennessee website and click on the GOTR 5K tab, followed by the register link. Pre-registration is $20 through April 22. After April 22 through race day, registration is $25. Girls on the Run is also offering a family rate discount of $15 for three registrants from the same household.
