WISE -- The Lenowisco Health District is offering free flu shots at no costs to anyone six months of age and older on a first come, first serve basis while supplies last at the district offices in Wise, Lee and Scott counties.

The health district will bill insurance plans for individuals who have insurance, but co-pays and deductibles will not be required. Individuals who do not have health insurance will receive the vaccine at no charge.

The free flu vaccine is available from 8 a.m.-4:15 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday at the Wise County/Norton Health Department at 134 Roberts Ave. S.W. in Wise; Scott County Health Department at 190 Beech St., Gate City Tuesdays through Friday; and the Lee County Health Department, 134 Hill St., Jonesville, on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday.

"This year's flu season is the worst our country has seen in nearly 10 years, and our area has not been spared," said Lenowisco Health District Director Dr. Eleanor Sue Cantrell.

To minimize your risk of catching or transmitting the flu, first know that it is not too late to get vaccinated. Get the shot. Always practice good hygiene. Wash your hands frequently and thoroughly for at least 20 seconds.

Cover your cough either into a disposable tissue or into a sleeve, not your hand. Stay home from work or school if you think you have the flu until you have no fever for 24 hours when not taking Tylenol or Ibuprofen.

If sick with the flu contact your health care provider early because early treatment can impact the course of the disease.
