WISE — The Virginia Department of Health’s Lenowisco Health District will offer REVIVE! training at health department offices in Lee, Wise and Scott counties in February.

Virginia’s opioid overdose and naloxone education program also provides Narcan (the trade name for naloxone) at no cost to those completing the short training session.

The training will teach participants how to recognize and respond to an opioid overdose emergency by administering Narcan, a medication that reverses the effects of opiates on the brain, giving time for emergency responders to provide medical care. The training also covers risk factors for opioid overdoses.

“The opioid epidemic is so widespread in our area that REVIVE! training is crucial for everyone,” said Dr. Sue Cantrell, director of the Lenowisco and Cumberland Plateau health districts. “A person who has overdosed is unconscious and unable to self-administer the antidote, so it is important to get as many community members trained and carrying Narcan as possible.”

A training session takes only 30 minutes or less and is available on a walk-in basis. No pre-registration is required. Training during the following times, dates and locations includes:

Lee County Health Department, 134 Hill St., Jonesville: Monday, Feb. 5 from noon to 7 p.m. and Wednesday, Feb. 21 from 8 a.m.-4 p.m.

Scott County Health Department, 190 Beech St., Suite 102, Gate City: Thursday, Feb. 8, 8 a.m.-noon.

Wise County Health Department, 134 Roberts Ave. SW, Wise: Thursday, Feb. 15 from noon to 7 p.m. and Tuesday, Feb. 27 from 8 a.m.-4 p.m.

“Almost every family has been touched in some way by the opioid epidemic,” Cantrell said. “Getting trained in REVIVE! and carrying Narcan is a great way for our communities to get involved. Everyone is encouraged to attend the REVIVE! training and take advantage of the no-cost Narcan while it is available.”
