ROGERSVILLE — The Hawkins County Health Department will host its third annual Baby Shower Friday at its Rogersville offices, providing new and expectant parents with a variety of helpful information and services.
The event will be held from 1-3 p.m. at 201 Park Blvd. and is offered in cooperation with the Rural Health Services Consortium, Inc.
Among the topics that will be addressed are tobacco cessation, the Baby and Me Tobacco Free program, breastfeeding, WIC, immunizations and the TennCare Kids program. Family planning and dental care will be provided by local community health partners.
Hawkins County Health Director Garnet Southerland said the Baby Shower is a way to provide families with lots of information to help them through pregnancy.
“Pregnancy is a special and exciting time for women and their families,” Southerland said. “Through our partnerships and community support, the event will provide expecting parents and families information to assist in a healthy pregnancy and the baby’s health after delivery.”
In 2015, the Hawkins County Health Department Infant Mortality Team identified the need to share healthy pregnancy and new baby information with expecting parents in Hawkins County.
The team, which is group of health department employees working on this topic as a community-based primary prevention activity, created the Baby Shower event as a project.
“The event provides a venue for expecting parents to be ‘showered’ with information regarding how to have a healthy pregnancy and healthy baby,” said Hannah Hunter, nursing supervisor at the Hawkins County Health Department.
