Scott, Pound water projects among grant recommendations

LEBANON — Water projects in Scott and Wise counties are included in recommendations for grant awards from the Coalfield Water Development Fund (CWDF).

The CWDF Executive Committee met Sept. 20 to screen applications for grant funding for safe drinking water projects and next month will recommend the Scott and Wise initiatives as recipients among others in the region.

The CWDF board will next meet Thursday, Oct. 25 at 1:30 p.m. in the Cumberland Plateau Planning District Commission Office in Lebanon to hear public comments on the recommended projects.

Projects to be considered for grant funding recommendations to the CWDF board by the committee include a $50,000 proposal to the Scott County Public Service Authority (PSA) toward Phase I of the Fairview Community Water Project, and $25,250 to the town of Pound in Wise County for water meter replacement.

Other projects up for consideration during the Oct. 25 session include $79,750 to the Dickenson County PSA for the Backbone Ridge/Lazarus Branch Waterline Extension; $125,000 to the Russell County PSA toward the Belfast Waterline Extension; and $100,000 to the Tazewell County PSA toward Phase IV of the Greater Tazewell WTP to Pocahontas project.

Individuals interested in expressing their opinions about the grant award proposals may appear at the Oct. 25 meeting to speak during the public comment period or may mail written comments to CWDF, P.O. Box 2194, Coeburn, VA 24230.
