Improvements coming to Indian Trail Drive

KINGSPORT – One of the off-kilter intersections on Stone Drive will soon get some attention, making one of the approaches just a little more manageable.

The intersection we’re talking about is the one at Stone Drive and Indian Trail Drive. It’s a split-face intersection where the two sides of Indian Trail don’t actually align perfectly. Traffic on one side goes first and then the other.

What’s being done is the widening of Indian Trail on the Kroger’s gas station side of Stone Drive, moving the curb line and enlarging the turning radius, said Michael Thompson, assistant public works director for the city.

“For the average driver you’re going to have a little more width there and that allows us to have a true right and left land coming out of Indian Trail at the signal,” Thompson said.

Currently, there’s two lanes on that side of Indian Trail, one coming in and one going out. At times, traffic can back up because one vehicle wants to turn left onto Stone Drive and those wanting to turn right have to wait.

When this improvement project gets done, Thompson said, there’s going to be two lanes coming out of Indian Trail – a dedicated right turn lane and a second lane for turning left or going across to the other side of Indian Trail.

No work is taking place on the K-mart side of Indian Trail.

“To realign (that intersection), you’d have a major impact to the Buffalo Wild Wing or the Kroger’s fuel center, one or the other,” Thompson said.

Summers-Taylor Construction submitted the low bid for the project at just over $208,000. Work is scheduled to begin next month and wrap up by the end of the year. Thompson said any closure of Indian Trail would take place at night, otherwise there could be flagging and/or shoulder closures during the day.
