Kingsport brings out "big toys" for Public Works Day

KINGSPORT – The Kingsport Farmers Market will be chock full of heavy equipment on Friday, everything from garbage trucks, street sweepers, back hoes and paving machines.

It’s an afternoon where the young – and the young at heart – can play with “really big toys” and learn more about what Kingsport’s Public Works Department does every day.

WHAT’S TAKING PLACE?

From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Friday, the city will be hosting its annual Public Works Day event at the Kingsport Farmers Market.

Kids and adults will get a first-hand look at some of the heavy equipment used by public works employees every day, including automated garbage collection trucks, the trash grabber truck, the mini street sweeper, leaf collection equipment, sewer camera vans, a directional drill machine, back hoe and mini paver.

You will be allowed to operate some of the automated equipment and kids will be able to paint snow plows, man hole covers and play corn hole and ring toss games. Food (hot dogs and chips) will be provided on a first-come, first serve basis.

MORE INFORMATION

“We very much appreciate the community taking a few minutes out of their day to visit with us at the Farmer’s Market Pavilion, where we can personally explain the many of services offered by the City of Kingsport,” said Ryan McReynolds, assistant city manager for operations.

Kingsport's Public Works Department is the largest, non-school related, department in the city with approximately 315 employees. The department includes water and sewer, streets and sanitation, building maintenance, traffic, engineering, stormwater and the Municipal Transportation and Planning Organization.
