Cumberland Gap golf team outpaces F&M field

JONESVILLE — Cumberland Gap used balanced scoring to dominate the field Tuesday on the way to winning the 28th annual Farmers & Miners Bank Invitational golf tournament at Cedar Hill Country Club.

Led by a 2-over-par 73 from Carley Downhour and a 76 from Peyton Wilder, Cumberland Gap finished with a team score of 325 — 23 strokes ahead of second- place Chilhowie.

The rest of the field was much closer.

The runner-up Warriors, led by Noah Burr’s 85, had a 348 total. Marion (350) placed third and Castlewood (351) finished fourth, bolstered by Coleman Cook’s 78.

Gate City got 87s from Luke Wallen and Brevan Spivey to fashion a 353 and a fifth-place finish.

Sullivan East (362), Lee High (377), John Battle (380), Richlands (383), Wise Central (408), Union (412), Eastside (417) and J.I. Burton (456) rounded out the field.

TOP PERFORMERS

Richlands’ Caleigh Street earned tournament medalist honors for the second year in a row. After firing an even-par 71 last year, Street had a 1-over 72 to record the best score of Tuesday’s event.

Downhour and Wise Central’s Jack England each shot 73 to finish a stroke behind Street. Downhour took the second-place medal after winning a scorecard playoff.

England said he struggled a little early in the tournament. But following about an hour rain delay, his game improved, particularly with hitting the greens that were slowed some from the rain.

“I feel like it benefited me more after we came in from that rain break,” the Central sophomore said. “In the first half I hit some chip shots and they weren’t really sticking to the greens and they rolled off. But once we went back out, the greens started sticking a little more and I took advantage of that and it turned out good.”

England said he was excited to get the year started and was happy with his performance in the season opener.

“It’s a good way to start the season. I improved seven strokes from this time last year, so it was pretty good,” England said.

Cumberland Gap’s Wilder had a 76, the day’s fourth-best individual score. The 78 from Castlewood’s Cook was good enough for a fifth-place individual finish.

GETTING UNDERWAY

The invitational was the first tournament of the season for most of the teams that participated.

Mountain 7 teams will be back at Cedar Hill on Aug. 22 when the district holds its first match.

GOOD FIELD

Fourteen teams took part. Among them was a second squad from Gate City that included golfers Danielle Brickey, Colin Keller, John Little, Kolton Helms and Zach Taylor.

The second Blue Devils team finished the day with a score of 417.
