CHIBA, Japan — Kingsport’s Cliff Kresge made his trip to Japan one to remember.

Kresge, in his first year playing on the PGA Tour Champions circuit, finished tied for 10th at the MasterCard Japan Championship on Sunday at Narita Golf Club.

It was the first top-10 finish for Kresge on the 50-and-older tour, and the $60,000 he earned moved him up to 62nd on the Charles Schwab Cup list with $109,938.

Kresge shot even-par scores in the first and third rounds. In between, he posted a 6-under 66. That left him at 6 under for the 54-hole tournament. He finished tied with Colin Montgomerie and Paul Goydos.

Scott McCarron had three birdies on the back nine and closed with a 5-under 67 for a three-shot victory over Billy Andrade (68) and Kirk Triplett (69).

McCarron, who finished at 13-under 203 at Narita Golf Club, won for the third time this year to extend his lead in the Charles Schwab Cup.
