STATE CHAMPS ADVANCE
Defending Class 3 state golf champion Abingdon, led by the 1-under-par 70 of medalist Conner Creasy, shot a team score of 291 on Tuesday at Lonesome Pine Country Club to win the Mountain 7 District championship.
In Bryce Addison’s 72 and Will Watson’s 73, Abingdon also recorded the second- and third-best individual scores of the tournament.
“We got off to a slow start, but they turned it on and got it together there by the end of the round,” said Falcons coach Jason Delp, whose team qualified for the Region 3D tournament on Monday at Draper Valley Golf Club.
“At this point we want to advance. You want to be in the top two. Of course, you want to win it and go in with as solid of a note possible and get a good seeding in the state tournament.
“Our scores are good enough where if we just do what we’ve done all year, it shouldn’t be a problem,” Delp added. “We should advance (to the state tournament), but we can’t get complacent. We’ve got to work harder this week than we’ve worked all year. If we do that, I think we’ll be all right.”
BEARS TO DEFEND REGIONAL TITLE
Union had a 304 to finish second in the district tournament. Gate City placed third at 357 to edge John Battle (360) for the other Region 2D berth. Wise Central (374) and Lee High (419) rounded out the team scores.
Because Abingdon is a Class 3 team, both the Bears and Blue Devils secured spots in the Region 2D tournament, scheduled for Holston Hills Country Club in Marion.
Union used its balanced scoring — Evan Blanton had a 74, Wes Slagle a 75, Austin Schlobohm a 76 and Cole Stanley a 79 — to record the best score of the district’s Class 2 teams.
“We had a good day,” said Bears coach Jarred Chandler. “It’s probably the most consistent as a team that we shot all year, particularly in an 18-hole match.
“We left a lot of shots on the course the last four holes. ... I think we need to be coming together about this time of year, so I think it was a good day.”
Union finished its good day on its home course, which is also the site of the VHSL Class 2 and Class 1 championships on Oct. 8-9.
The Bears will play the regional tournament on a course that’s less familiar, though not completely unknown.
“When these kids were sophomores and juniors, we played in a preseason tournament over there,” Chandler said of Holston Hills. “We went over about a week ago and played and we’re going over this Friday and play. So we’ll be familiar enough with it.
“In the end it’s just golf. If they can get from the fairway to the green into the hole, then we’ll be OK.”
INDIVIDUALS MOVING ON
In addition to Abingdon, Union and Gate City advancing, five individual golfers not on those teams also qualified for regionals. They were John Battle’s Grace Gillen (75), Andrew Crowder (91) and Trey Vance (94); Wise Central’s Jack England (80); and Lee High’s Zack Moore (95).
