Sullivan South’s Kara Carter was tied for 10th after shooting a 4-over-par 76. Dobyns-Bennett’s Isabella van der Biest was just outside the top 10 in a tie for 11th after carding a 77.
Carter sat at 3 under after birdieing the 10th hole, but things went awry from that point and she was 7 over par over the last eight holes.
Van der Biest was 3 over on the front nine and 2 over on the back.
Malia Stovall of Franklin County was the first-round leader after firing off a 66. Houston sat atop the leaderboard in the team standings after a 1-under 143. Farragut was eight shots back in second.
Defending Class AAA state champion Halls of Knoxville led the boys’ team standings after a 3-over 291. Hendersonville was seven shots off the pace.
Last year’s runner-up, Science Hill, had a tough first day and was in fifth after a 313.
Halls’ Ryan Hall shot 66 to hold the individual lead, two shots better than Beech’s Michael Barnard. Tennessee High’s Jet Tickle was tied for fourth after a 2-under 70.
The final round will be played Wednesday.
