Ballard also threw a touchdown for the top-ranked and defending state champion Greene Devils (12-0). Greeneville will take on unbeaten and second- ranked Anderson County in next week’s 4A quarterfinals.
Ballard kept the ball four times for 115 yards, scoring on runs of 24, 58 and 16 yards. He was 6-of-12 passing for 133 yards, and his 32-yard touchdown throw to Cameron Hite capped a 21-0 first quarter by the Greene Devils.
The Rebels found their way back into the game a bit on a 1-yard touchdown run by quarterback Luke Pollack. But Greeneville held a 35-7 lead at halftime, and Gillespie tacked on scoring runs from 33 and 7 yards out in the third quarter.
Gillespie’s first score covered 17 yards in the opening period. He finished with 87 yards on nine carries.
The Rebels (8-4) managed only 90 yards of total offense.
MARYVILLE 42, SCIENCE HILL 7
MARYVILLE — The road to the 6A championship still goes through Maryville.
The defending state champion Rebels (11-1) had 341 yards of total offense and more than doubled Science Hill’s time of possession in the second round of the 6A playoffs at Jim Renfro Field.
It offset a productive performance by Science Hill running back Chris Thomas, who had 23 carries for 140 yards — including a long run of 51 yards.
The Hilltoppers (6-6) stopped the Rebels (11-1) on the opening possession but fumbled on their first possession, which got the ball rolling for the home team.
ANDERSON COUNTY 54, ELIZABETHTON 21
CLINTON — Stung by a quick score on Anderson County’s first possession, the Cyclones lost senior quarterback Carter Everett to injury on their second possession, and the Mavericks went on to crush Elizabethton (10-2) in the second round of the Class 4A playoffs.
Ryan Moog carried 20 times for 247 yards and four touchdowns for the Mavericks (12-0). Marquis Gallagher added 86 on eight carries.
Anderson County earned a second chance against top-ranked Greeneville in next week’s quarterfinal round. In last season’s meeting, the Greene Devils made a stirring comeback from a 21-0 deficit to win 38-35.
CHILHOWIE 49, EASTSIDE 0
CHILHOWIE — Zach Cale ran for three touchdowns and threw for another, a 40-yarder to Jake Kegley, in the Warriors’ shutout win over the Spartans in the Region 1D playoffs.
Chilhowie (10-0) scored 14 first-quarter points then exploded for 21 in the second frame to ice the win early. Eastside closed its season with a 4-6 record.
GRUNDY 55, THOMAS WALKER 13
GRUNDY— Grundy took advantage of a Thomas Walker turnover early in the first quarter and racked up 281 rushing yards in a lopsided Class 1 Region D win. Gabe Fiser scored on runs of 4, 8 and 14 to lead the Golden Wave (7-4).
Dawson Lee put the Pioneers (7-4) on the board in the third quarter with a 16-yard scoring run. Dalton Langley returned a fumble 53 yards for Thomas Walker’s final score.
PATRICK HENRY 47, HONAKER 7
EMORY — Zach Brown racked up 148 yards and three touchdowns to boost the Rebels to the first-round win in the Region 1D playoffs.
Patrick Henry (9-1) had over 370 yards of offense and scored in every quarter.
The Tigers (5-5) avoided the shutout with a fourth-quarter touchdown catch by Levi Glymph.
