GATE CITY —  In its first-ever appearance at Legion Field, Daniel Boone blazed its way to an impressive 48-13 win over Gate City.

The Trailblazers (3-1) ran for 282 yards and passed for another 150. Boone’s stingy first-team defense held the Blue Devils (0-4) to just 29 yards on the ground.

Boone quarterback Easton Harrell ran for one touchdown and passed for two more, and running back Charlie Cole galloped for 160 yards on 11 carries and scored three times.

“What we saw from Gate City’s defense was just what we prepared for,” said Harrell, who hit Brennan Blair on TD passes of 26 and 21 yards. “What we learned tonight is that when we run and pass the ball well, we can be a deadly team.”

The Blue Devils put up a fight in the first quarter, keeping Boone off the scoreboard until Harrell’s 1-yard run to the end zone with 45 seconds left in the quarter.

Gate City fumbled on its first possession of the second quarter and Boone capitalized with a four-play, 55-yard drive capped by Cole’s 15-yard burst through the middle of the defense.

After the Trailblazers forced Gate City to punt, Cole sprinted 62 yards for another touchdown, and Boone was off to the races.

“That’s the best our offensive line has played all year,” said Cole, who finished with 160 yards on just 11 carries. “I’m grateful for the push they got up front tonight.”

“We got off to a slow start in the first quarter,” said Boone coach Jeremy Jenkins. “But I thought that after that second touchdown, we really put the hammer down.

“Easton got outside the pocket and got the ball to our wide receivers, and that was big.”

Boone led 35-0 at the half and a running clock was in play from the start of the third quarter. The ’Blazers led 41-0 when the starters went to the bench with 6:15 to go in the third quarter.

Trailblazers backup QB Kaleb Worley provided Boone’s final score on a 1-yard run with 4:13 left in the third quarter.

The Blue Devils delighted the home fans when Levi Rhoton took a pitch and swept around left end for a spectacular 70-yard touchdown run. Gate City added an 11-yard TD run by Luke Reed in the fourth quarter to end the scoring.

Gate City’s downfall was four fumbles. Boone scored on three of them.

“Against a good football team, you can’t have turnovers like that,” said Gate City coach Chris Akers. “We’ve just got to hang onto the football better.”
