BLACKSBURG — Justin Hamilton has been promoted to the Virginia Tech football coaching staff on an interim basis, Hokies coach Justin Fuente announced Friday.

Hamilton, the former Clintwood High School star who played for Virginia Tech from 2002-05, is filling the position previously held by co-defensive coordinator and safeties coach Galen Scott, who resigned.

Hamilton returned to Blacksburg as director of player development for the defense earlier this year.

The 35-year-old Hamilton played multiple positions over his 52 games with the Hokies under Frank Beamer. Hamilton spent time at running back, wide receiver and defensive back in addition to having a prominent role on special teams.

Prior to his return to Virginia Tech, Hamilton had a four-season stint as linebackers coach and special teams coordinator at VMI. That followed four years at Virginia-Wise where he rose to the position of defensive coordinator.

Scott, who resigned amid allegations of an extramarital affair, joined the Hokies’ staff in 2016 after spending six seasons at Memphis.

Virginia Tech also announced that Chuck Cantor, the Hokies’ director of player personnel for the past four seasons, is leaving to take the same role at Florida.
