Annual Trash Barrel Paint-In kicks off Fun Fest again this year

KINGSPORT — The 34th annual Keep Kingsport Beautiful Trash Barrel Paint-In, presented by Domtar, will be one of the events to jump-start Fun Fest again this year and will be held on the grounds of Allandale Mansion on Tuesday, July 9.

People of all ages are invited to decorate the trash barrels used for Fun Fest, as well as more than 100 events held throughout Kingsport each year. Participants are encouraged to paint their own original designs as well as themes that encourage recycling, litter prevention and litter-free Fun Fest events.

“Domtar is a longtime supporter of Keep Kingsport Beautiful, and they have been donating the barrels for several years. Their sponsorship of the Trash Barrel Paint-In is a perfect fit for both organizations,” said Robin Cleary, KKB director.

The event will take place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., and all barrels to be judged must be completed by 11:30. Face painting will be offered, and Miss Kingsport will make an appearance. Festus and the Kingsport Fire Department’s Sparky will also be on hand.

“It’s very much a family friendly event,” said Cleary. “Some people that come to participate came when they were children, and now they bring their children and sometimes grandchildren.”

One winner will be chosen from each age group. The age groups are: 5 and under, 6-8, 9-11, 12-17 and 18 and over. Family, special friends and the Best Overall/Terry Light Memorial awards will also be handed out. Winners will be invited to attend the Fun Fest Sponsors Breakfast, where the winning barrels will be displayed. Participants should bring all painting supplies, including spray paint, water-based paint, stencils and any other supplies.

“We encourage people to preregister,” Cleary said. “We will be taking registration fees at the event, but there is no guarantee there will be barrels available.”

A $5 registration fee is required for each barrel requested on the registration form, and the deadline for preregistration is July 8. Registration fees are non-refundable. Cash only, same day reservations will be accepted based on barrel availability. Registration forms are available at the Fun Fest Store, 400 Clinchfield St. All proceeds go to support the many programs of KKB.
