Norton's Best Friend Festival under way

NORTON — Youngsters can dip a line on Saturday and reel in a week-long festival for everyone else as the city of Norton's 2018 Best Friend Festival gets cranking through the rest of this weekend and through all of next week.

The festival kicks off with Kids Fishing Day from 8:30-11 a.m. on Saturday at the Norton Reservoir, open to children ages 12 and under. Sunday's fare is the Woodbooger Chase Triathlon from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Flag Rock Recreation Area/Norton Reservoir.

Things start to warm up from Monday through next Saturday. Monday is Gospel Night starting at 5:30 p.m. at the Wolfe, Williams and Reynolds Parking Lot on 5th Street, Tuesday's itinerary includes the Norton Friends and Farmers Market from 4-6 p.m. at the 815 Park Ave. S.W. Farmers Market building, then begin to sizzle for the rest of the week.

Wednesday's itinerary includes Norton's Largest Sandbox with hidden prizes in the sand, all day at Norton City Park on 11th Street; the First Bank and Trust Picnic in the Park from 11 a.m.-1 p.m.; Paint A Trash Can at the park from 1-2 p.m.; Outdoor Crafts at the park from 1-2 p.m.; an ages 12 and under Bike Rodeo at 2 p.m. at the park tennis courts; and WAXM's Karoke/Talent Show Night starting at 6:30 p.m. at the park.

Thursday's fare includes Norton Cinema City Kids Day with $1 movies admission for children at 10 a.m. and noon; Senior Citizens Day from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Norton City Park Basketball Court; Norton Lion's Club Kids Night from 5-9 p.m. at the park; Crankin' With Crutchfield's Car Show and Teen Dance for ages 13-19 from 8-11 p.m. at the municipal parking lot on Park Avenue; and Music of the Mountains Homecoming at the Country Cabin II starting at 7:30 p.m.

Friday includes Slip and Slide Water Activities from 1-3 p.m. at Norton Elementary School; Get Ready to Dance, Twirl and Tumble at 7 p.m. between 5th and 6th streets; Friday Night Family Fun Night Concert featuring Hello October from 6-11 p.m. in the downtown area; and Friday Night Kids Place from 7-11 p.m., downtown area.

Next Saturday's bash starts with the 7-11 a.m. Norton Kiwanis Club Pancake Breakfast on 7th Street; the Citywide Yard Sale from 7 a.m.-3 p.m.; Flea Market Vendors open at 7 p.m. at the municipal parking lot on Park Avenue; The Ballad Health Rehab 8K/5K Run with registration starting at 6 p.m. at the Norton Community Hospital Healthplex and a 7 p.m. race start; and the High Knob Music Festival from noon to 8:30 p.m. at the High Knob Recreation Area.
