KINGSPORT — The sweltering summer heat didn’t faze the dedicated competitors participating in the 2011 Fun Fest Cornhole Tournament on Saturday. The tournament, sponsored by Chef’s Pizzeria, Express Signs and Eastman Credit Union, returned to Fun Fest for its fourth year. A total of 256 players made up the 128 teams that competed.
“This is the largest cornhole tournament in the state of Tennessee as well as the largest in the South,” said James Phillips, creator of the tournament.
Four years ago, Phillips decided to hold a free tournament during the week of Fun Fest to see how the Kingsport community responded.
“So I did a free tournament and 96 teams showed up,” he said. “So we decided we might have something and the next year we made it an official event and had 128 teams.”
With the Winners, Losers, and Loveable Losers brackets, the Cornhole Tournament has something for competitors of all levels.
