The wholesome family musical is set in the 1930s, when the Rev. Mervin Oglethorpe, determined to move his parishioners into the modern world, invites the Singing Sanders Family to perform at the First Ever Saturday Night Sing. Audiences are invited to clap, sing, laugh and otherwise join in the fun as the cast performs more than two dozen traditional gospel songs, including “Church in the Wildwood,” “Rock of Ages,” “Whispering Hope” and “I’ll Fly Away.”
“This is a musical the whole family can enjoy,” said Charles Reed, the production’s director. “Audiences will be humming on their way home from the theater.”
Reed joins forces with stage manager Kelsey Owens, set designer Brandon Jones and music director Tim Smith to bring the beloved musical to life.
“Though the audience will see a couple of familiar faces on stage, the cast is made up of many talented new people,” Reed said.Read the expanded version of this report in the print edition or the enhanced electronic version of the Kingsport Times-News.
