Hawkins BOE student reps asks for leaks to be repaired at Volunteer

ROGERSVILLE — On Thursday, the Hawkins County Board of Education approved an $81,000 bid to re-roof Bulls Gap School, after which Volunteer High School student Neisha French asked why leaks at her school weren’t being addressed.

French is one of six high school seniors who serve as student representatives to the BOE.

She told the board there are four trash cans to catch rainwater in the 400s wing of the main building near the exit to the vocational walkway “seeing heavy leakage.”

“There’s a potential for mold and further destruction of the roof. I’m not sure exactly how substantial Bulls Gap’s is, and there’s no doubt it needs to be taken care of,” French said. “But maybe also address leaks at Volunteer, Cherokee ... before they get worse or before they pose such a danger that we have to pull that money from somewhere else.”

Board Chairman Bob Larkins said French had a valid request, and he asked Maintenance Supervisor Shannon Glass to update the BOE and student reps on roof leak repairs at Volunteer.

Glass said that specific leak has been problematic, and workers had it stopped for awhile, but now it’s back.

“It’s actually coming through a conduit,” Glass said. “It’s not actually a roof leak. Where it’s entering the conduit we’re not real sure yet, but we have worked on it, and we will continue to work on it to get it fixed.”

A contractor is expected to begin addressing leaks at Volunteer this month, Glass noted.

“There’s a company that’s helping us now called WTI that just got done at Cherokee and should be at Volunteer next,” he said. “They are working on some roof leaks for us because this year, as you know, has been rather wet. We have one roofer and he can’t keep up. So I brought in some extra help, and we’re trying to get them as quickly as we can.”

Larkins noted, “With 90 buildings, we are constantly looking at roofs and leaks. We spend lots of money on trying to bring these schools up to date.”
