TVAAS results for schools and districts are based on a scale of 1-5, with Level 5 being the highest possible score.
TVAAS is a statistical analysis of student assessment data used to measure the impact schools and teachers have on their students’ academic growth rate from year to year.
TVAAS helps educators identify best practices and implement programs that best meet the needs of their students, as well as make informed decisions about where to focus resources to ensure growth opportunities for all students.
Interim Director of Schools Reba Bailey told the Times News last week that one area of focus for the school system has been literacy.
“Hawkins County has provided Read to be Ready Summer Camps for the past three summers to encourage the love of reading, provide books for students and to work to ensure that students do not experience ‘summer slide,’ ” Bailey said. “We are excited that this year our middle school ELA (English/language arts) teachers are participating in the Niswonger Foundation’s Rural Life Grant, which provides additional support, funding and professional development to continue our literacy focus.”
Among the schools that received a score of four or five in literacy were: Church Hill Middle School, Level 5; Volunteer High School, Level 5; Mount Carmel Elementary, Level 4; Mooresburg Elementary, Level 4; St. Clair Elementary, Level 4; Surgoinsville Elementary, Level 4; Cherokee High School, Level 4; and Surgoinsville Middle School, Level 4.
“We are extremely proud of the improvements we have made, especially in the area of literacy,” Bailey added. “In order for continued growth to occur in all areas of the curriculum, we must begin by focusing on developing strong readers. Our RTI (Response to Intervention) programs, the Read to Be Reading Coaching Network and summer camps, along with the commitment of the Niswonger Foundation, all have supported our efforts to ensure that our students are proficient readers.”
Several other schools scored 4’s and 5’s as their overall composite score including: Cherokee High School, Level 5; Clinch School, Level 5; Hawkins Elementary, Level 5; Mount Carmel Elementary, Level 5; St. Clair Elementary, Level 5; Surgoinsville Elementary, Level 5; Church Hill Middle, Level 4; Surgoinsville Middle, Level 4; and Mooresburg Elementary, Level 4.
TVAAS End-Of-Course district wide high school scores included: EOC English III, Level 5; EOC Biology I, Level 4; and EOC English II, Level 4.
Cherokee CTE (career technical education) earned a Level 5 in EOC composite, and Volunteer CTE earned a Level 5 in EOC literacy.
