KINGSPORT — An afternoon electrical power outage sent students in the Sullivan South High School zone outside Monday, the first day of school for Sullivan County Schools.

Director of Schools Evelyn Rafalowski said a transformer blew in the early afternoon and South students were sent out to the football stadium and, after a storm with lightning, to the field house. However, she said students were back in the building in time for normal dismissal at 2:20 p.m. The outage also affected nearby Rock Springs Elementary and Sullivan Gardens K-8, but she said students at those schools were released to go home without incident, too.

Despite the outage, Rafalowski said the first day of school for nearly 10,000 students in the system went well.
