KINGSPORT — Someone might guess that the Jackson Elementary School Dance Club was all about dancing. However, the teacher who leads the dance group said it is also about empowering students through The Leader in Me Program at the Kingsport City Schools elementary facility.

“We are basically just a family. We work together,” said club sponsor and reading interventionist Teresa Haywood. She said the group of girls in grades 3-5 enjoy dancing, but that the club also helps them get over being anxious about getting in front of groups.

It fits into The Leader in Me, which is based on “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People,” a book written by Stephen Covey and adapted as The 7 Habits of Happy Kids/The Leader in Me. In KCS, the program is at Jackson and Johnson elementary schools.

The group performs to everything from county music to classical and Motown, and they gave a performance to the Board of Education at a recent work session.
