On Thursday evening, the Greeneville Board of Education voted to narrow its list of director candidates from seven to two: Starnes and East View Elementary School Principal Dale Landers.
The Greeneville BOE will host a public forum Wednesday evening where Starnes and Landers will answer questions submitted in writing from the community and then answer questions from the school board.
After the Q&A session, the BOE is scheduled to vote whether to appoint Starnes or Landers to the position.
A new Greeneville director of schools search was launched earlier this year when it was announced that Director Jeff Moorehouse had been chosen to lead Kingsport City Schools.
Starnes was selected Hawkins County director of schools to replace retiring Charlotte Britton in 2014 following a hotly debated selection process which saw former Rogersville Middle School principal and current Volunteer High School track coach Jim Ailshie nearly selected by the divided board.
Ailshie earned a majority four votes from the BOE, but stepped out of the running when it became clear he wouldn’t receive the mandatory “super majority” of five votes.
