GATE CITY — There is only one day left to help Gate City Middle and High schools’ outdoor classroom win a $25,000 grant from State Farm.

Lake Fleming Wetlands Outdoor Learning Center was selected from 2,000 entries to be considered for the grant.

State Farm Neighborhood Assist helps worthwhile nonprofit organizations across the nation, offering $25,000 grants for neighborhood projects involved in education, safety and community development. The State Farm Youth Advisory Board narrowed the submissions to 200, and now your votes will help determine the winners.

Each person is limited to 10 votes per day. To vote, you’ll need a valid email address.

The 40 causes earning the highest number of votes by 11:59:59 p.m. Friday will each win a Neighborhood Assist grant of $25,000.

Scott County school officials say if Lake Fleming wins the grant, money can be used for several different projects including installing a solar pump in the pond to enable oxygen flow to sustain the aquatic life; building a retaining wall; finishing the outdoor classroom’s amphitheater; and completing the memorial garden for deceased students and staff.

Lake Fleming is used to provide outdoor educational opportunities for students and the community. With the help of the Army Corp of Engineers, a mosquito-infested area that was once a dumping ground for construction material and trash, has been transformed into a habitat for macroinvertebrates, fish, turtles and frogs.

Teachers and staff say Lake Fleming’s impact on the community has already been felt and that winning the $25,000 grant will help with the projects that are needed to further enhance the outdoor learning center.

Lake Fleming is named in honor of Rick Lake and Scot Fleming, band teachers at Gate City, and is located across from the National Guard Armory on Harry Fry Drive. It is also adjacent to Legion Field.
