BRISTOL, Tenn. — Weaver Elementary in eastern Sullivan County was closed Thursday and will remain closed Friday because of structural roof issues brought to light by a roof leak, the county school system announced Thursday. The plan is for classes to resume classes there early next week, Director of Schools Evelyn Rafalowski said.

“A leak in the roof was reported this week,” according to a school system news release dated Wednesday but released Thursday morning from Rafalowski.

“As a result of that evaluation, we felt we needed a more intensive evaluation. The roof line in the area over the library has been evaluated today by a structural engineer and at this tie, structural reinforcement of the roof framing is being recommended and during that time we feel it is in the best interest of everyone not to occupy the building,” she said in the release. “Our maintenance department will being work in the morning and will work non-stop until this initial work is complete. Our earliest estimate and hope is that work will be completed Sunday and school will resume as soon as possible (early next week) after the work has been completed.”

She said once the work is completed, the structural engineer will evaluate the building against to ensure the safety of the roofline.

“Once this initial stage is complete, we will further perform some additional support work by adding several columns outside the building,” she wrote.

Weaver is one of the older buildings still in use as a school by Sullivan County, and the Board of Education in 2011 discussed the possibility of its closure and needed repairs, and the board eventual pursued a facilities study that resulted in a phase 1 plan to build a new high school near Exit 63 of Interstate 81 and a new middle school in the Sullivan East High zone. That could free up the Holston Valley Middle School building to be used as a new location for Weaver.
