Fun Fest Announces Sunset Concert Series Entertainers: NEEDTOBREATHE and Andy Grammer will close Fun Fest 2019

STAFF Report • May 30, 2019 at 7:30 PM

KINGSPORT — NEEDTOBREATHE and Andy Grammer will be the festival finale performers for Fun Fest 2019, organizers announced Thursday.

Newsboys will kick off the Sunset Concert Series on Thursday, July 18, followed by Tyler Farr on Friday, July 19 and NEEDTOBREATHE and Andy Grammer on Saturday, July 20.

“The Sunset Concert Series is the highlight of our nine-day festival, and we are always fortunate to bring in a variety of talent for these three days to entertain our residents and visitors from more than 25 states,” said Fun Fest 2019 Chairman Colette George.

Andy Grammer has had a succession of anthemic pop hits, six of which are certified gold or better. His debut album featured the platinum singles “Keep Your Head Up” and “Fine By Me.” Grammer’s second album, “Magazines or Novels,” featured the quadruple platinum worldwide hit “Honey, I'm Good,” which was one of the best-selling songs of 2015, and the certified gold anthem “Good To Be Alive (Hallelujah).” His third full-length album, “The Good Parts,” was released in December 2017 and includes his global smash hit “Fresh Eyes,” with over 350 million total streams.

Saturday night’s concert will also feature Grammy-nominated rock band NEEDTOBREATHE. Their most recent album, “H A R D L O V E,” debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Top Albums, Top Current Albums, Top Rock Albums and Top Alternative Albums charts and No. 2 on the Billboard 200, their greatest debut yet. This was the follow-up to “Rivers In the Wasteland,” which debuted at No. 3 overall on the Billboard 200 and spawned the RIAA-certified gold single “Brother” (featuring Gavin DeGraw). Known for an aggressive touring schedule and impressive live show, they released their first-ever fully acoustic album — “Acoustic Live Vol. 1” — in November 2018.

Eastman is the presenting sponsor for the Saturday Night Concert.

The Eastman Fireworks Spectacular will follow the show at approximately 9:30 p.m.

The headliner for this year’s Contemporary Christian Concert is Christian rock group Newsboys. They’ve defined Christian music for more than two decades, and they move between rock and pop, worship and dance. They’ve sold more than 8 million units and amassed eight gold certifications, 33 No. 1 radio hits, four Grammy nominations, two American Music Award nominations and taken home multiple Dove Awards. In addition, their chart-topping, platinum-certified single “God’s Not Dead” inspired Pure Flix’s 2014 hit film of the same name. A special feature for this show will be an appearance by Adam Agee, formerly of Audio Adrenaline.

Thursday night’s Contemporary Christian Concert will open with Nashville-based Christian band Sidewalk Prophets. The Dove Award-winning band has three major studio albums, five No. 1 hits, and eight top five songs under its belt.

The Contemporary Christian Concert is sponsored by Carter-Trent Funeral Home, Goodwill Industries of Tenneva, Tele-Optics, Inc. and 88.3 WCQR.

The Friday Night Concert headliner is country artist Tyler Farr. When his debut album, “Redneck Crazy,” was released in 2013, Nashville recording artist Farr landed at No. 2 on the Billboard Country Albums Chart and No. 5 on the Billboard Top 200. With the release of his highly anticipated sophomore album, “Suffer in Peace,” in 2015, Farr once again landed in the Top 5 on both the Billboard Top 200 Albums and Billboard Country Albums Chart, making Farr the only solo male country artist to have his first two studio albums debut in the top 5 on the Billboard 200 Chart. Tyler has three No. 1 songs to his credit and recently released his latest single, “Love by the Moon,” in advance of his third studio album.

Opening for Farr will be Drake White and the Big Fire. White was named one of No Depression’s 7 Male Artists to Break Out in 2018. He recently put together “Drake White and the Big Fire Live” (2018) and the celebrated five-track EP, “Pieces” (2018). This follows his 2016 debut album, “Spark,” which earned praise both critically and across his loyal fan following. The 2016 Taste of Country Fan Choice Awards Album of the Year is a 12-track labor of love showcasing his songwriting with a rock-infused, organic country sound and signature foot-stomp.

The first opening act will be breakout duo The War and Treaty. The husband and wife force of Michael and Tanya Trotter have a new full-length album, “Healing Tide.” The artists received nominations for the 2019 Americana Music Awards.

The Friday Night Concert is presented by Appalachian Power, Domtar and WXBQ.

An added feature for the concert series this year will be video screens sponsored by Holston Medical Group and GRC Construction.

The Sunset Concert Series will take place at J. Fred Johnson Stadium. Additional sponsors include Eastman Credit Union, Toyota of Kingsport, WCYB and Visit Kingsport.
