Tri-Cities Civil War Round Table welcomes author Bill Cooper

The Tri Cities Civil War Round Table (TCCWRT) will welcome acclaimed guest speaker William “Bill” Cooper, Boyd Professor Emeritus at Louisiana State University, to Kingsport this week for a program on “Jefferson Davis as Commander in Chief of the Confederate States of America.”
The free program will be held at 7 p.m., Monday, May 13, in room 219 of the Eastman Employee Center, located at 400 South Wilcox Drive, and is open to the public.
A native of Kingstree, South Carolina, Cooper received his AB from Princeton University and his Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins University. He served as an officer in the U.S. Army from 1966 to 1968. He spent his entire professional career at LSU, where he was also dean of the Graduate School from 1982 to 1989. He held fellowships from the Institute of Southern History at Johns Hopkins, the Charles Warren Center for Studies in American History at Harvard, the Guggenheim Foundation, and the National Endowment for the Humanities. He is a past president of the Southern Historical Association and a Fellow of the Society of American Historians.
He is the author of numerous books, including: “The Conservative Regime: South Carolina, 1877-1890,” “The South and the Politics of Slavery, 1828-1856,” “Liberty and Slavery: Southern Politics to 1860” and “The American South: A History” (which he co-authored with Thomas T. Terrill). He also penned “Jefferson Davis and the Civil War Era,” “We Have the War Upon us: The Onset of the Civil War, Nov 1860-Apr 1861,” “The Lost Founding Father: John Quincy Adams and the Transformation of American Politics,” and “Approaching Civil War and Southern History.”
