Kingsport Spring Spectacular issues call for photo entries

Submitted by Ann Fortney • Apr 20, 2019 at 4:30 PM

The 17th Annual Kingsport Spring Spectacular Photography Contest and Exhibition is issuing its yearly “call for entries” and everyone is invited to take part.

The mission for organizer Ann Fortney is to “To promote interest and fun in the ever-growing art of photography. To provide a quality competition for amateur and professional, young and young at heart in the region and beyond.”

So, whether you have just picked up a camera for the first time or have been a photographer for years, whether you enjoy photography as a hobby or a professional, whether you are 4 years old or 94 years old, this event is for you.

The Kingsport Spring Spectacular Photography Contest and Exhibition is divided into three levels of competition: Youth, Amateur and Proficient.

The Youth level is for those ages 14 and under. The Amateur level is for those people who are just getting into photography, who enjoy photography as a hobby; who enter competitions but do not regularly place first, second or third; and who don’t sell or offer to sell their photographs. The Proficient level is for those people who are of a higher skill level in photography, who enter competitions and place first, second or third regularly, and who sell or offer to sell their photography.

The Amateur and Proficient levels are divided into three categories (Nature, Pictorial and Special Theme), and two of those (Nature and Pictorial) are subdivided into color and monochrome (black & white).

The Carrie Penley Special Theme category honors Ann’s mother, who loved all kinds of scavenger hunts, especially photographic scavenger hunts. This year’s special theme is: “Playtime.”

Each year, there is also a special award honoring Ann’s father, The Jerry Penley “I Love the Blue Ridge/Appalachian Region.” When he passed in 2006, Ann and her mother wanted to honor Jerry's love of the Blue Ridge and Appalachian Region with a special award which goes to the one photo that best depicts the love of the Blue Ridge/Appalachians her father had.

“If you want ideas of what the judges are looking for simply go to our website (www.penjaccphoto.com) and look at the photo gallery. There you can get a feel for what the award is about,” Ann said. Participants will enter the photo into one of the other three categories for judging, and request on the application that it be judged for the special award.

Monetary prizes and ribbons are awarded to those photographs placing in the top three in each category, as well as the “Best of Show” and “People’s Choice” winners. There are ribbons for photographs receiving Honorable Mentions. Voting for the People’s Choice Award - chosen by patrons who view the exhibit - ends at 3 p.m., June 16.

Entries will be accepted at Rainbow’s End Floral and Gift Shop, 214 E. Center Street, in Kingsport from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, from April 29 through May 10, and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturdays, May 4 and May 11. The deadline to enter is 3 p.m., May 11. Those outside the area may ship entries to: Ann Fortney 154 W. Wanola Ave. Kingsport, TN 37660. The same deadlines for entry apply. The fee is $5 per entry with no limit on the number of entries per person. All entry fees are turned back into the event in the way of monetary prizes, ribbons, and the award reception.

The Kingsport Spring Spectacular Photography Exhibition will be on display June 2-26 at the Renaissance Center. Judging is May 18 with the Awards Reception from 2 to 4 p.m., June 2 in the Main Gallery.

Applications are available in photo labs, most craft/hobby stores, matting/framing stores, libraries, some gift stores, Kingsport Chamber of Commerce, Kingsport Carousel, and online at www.penjaccphoto.com.
