The life-long dream of Shantell Bogle, executive director of the Oasis of Kingsport, was to be involved full-time in ministry that benefited the women of her community. She had worked extensively in church projects but longed to devote her time to making life just a little better for the women with whom she came in contact.
“I was friends with the executive director before me, but we had lost touch,” began Shantell. “When we reconnected, she told me that she’d run out to a grocery store she never went to dressed in her taekwondo clothes to grab something she needed quickly. She ran into my husband who noticed her unusual attire, recognized her, and then he gave her my contact information. She said she knew immediately that I was the person she’d been praying about to take her place at Oasis of Kingsport. I’m living proof of Hebrews 11:6 which says, ‘He is a rewarder of those that diligently seek him.’” And after years of preparing for devoting her life to a women’s ministry program, Shantell was chosen as the executive director of Oasis of Kingsport.
Oasis of Kingsport is a 501(c)(3) women’s ministry that serves the women (primarily) of Kingsport. These services include providing a place to do laundry or to take a shower, and a peaceful place to grab a bite of food. Women can participate in counseling, support groups, or can even take classes that enhance their lifestyles.
“We have cooking classes, nutrition classes that teach how to shop and cook healthy, and even Bible studies that cover everything from the basics to more in-depth studies,” added Shantell. “The women can learn how to sew and earn their own sewing machine, or they can do rock painting which helps them to express their feelings and creativity.”
On June 30, 2018, Oasis of Kingsport will hold a fundraiser called “Oasis Picker’s Paradise” named after the famous show on television, “American Pickers.” The event will run from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., June 30 at the Model Center Event Center, located at 201 E. Center Street in Downtown Kingsport. All monies received will be used to support the women’s ministry which receives no government or United Way funding. All of the budget funds for The Oasis of Kingsport come from church, individual or community donations.
“We have everything from household goods to décor items to clothing,” Shantell said. “We’d like to invite everyone to come out and support Oasis of Kingsport so that we can continue to provide our outreach to the women of Kingsport.”
You may want to visit their Facebook page “Oasis of Kingsport” or go to their website, where you will find a list of items that you can donate throughout the year. There is also a direct link to their Paypal account where you can make a donation that is tax deductible.
On the back of the shirts worn by staff members is the Bible verse Psalms 1:3 which says, “and he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.” With care, compassion and a sharing of the Gospel, Oasis of Kingsport is touching lives and making a real difference to women in Kingsport.
