A step in the right direction for Lynn View

KINGSPORT — Kingsport has elevated the curb appeal of the Lynn View Community Center.

Here’s a roundup of the improvements recently completed at the Lynn Garden facility.

— The first floor restrooms were made more accessible and attractive.

— The old steps leading up to the main entrance were ripped out and replaced with modern ones with handrails, lighting and an improved, more accessible handicapped ramp.

— The front parking lot was resurfaced and restriped, with added handicapped spaces.

— The courtyard around the original flagpole was landscaped and brick pavers added around the perimeter.

Parks and Recreation Director Kitty Frazier said the new steps are a great improvement.

“They were wide and large and not as suitable for today’s population, plus they were crumbling, falling apart and not very safe,” Frazier said. “The whole area is much more inviting.”

Duco Construction did the step/ramp work for just under $200,000. Superior Home Builders performed the courtyard/landscaping work for $11,700.

WHAT’S NEXT?

The next major project on tap for Lynn View is the replacement of the concrete grandstand by the football field, Frazier said.

“The bleachers are not to the standard we would accept today for safety and accessibility,” Frazier said. “We’re going to demolish them and replace them with aluminum bleachers.”

Depending on the schedule of the football leagues that play on that field, Frazier said the work could be done this summer or in the fall.
