Lunch Box ready for 12th summer of feeding Hawkins children

ROGERSVILLE — Hawkins County’s Lunch Box summer child-feeding program has come a long way since it was launched in 2006 by the Rogersville-based Of One Accord ministry.

That first year, one school bus converted into a mobile cafeteria served 1,300 meals in the Rogersville area only.

Fast-forward to 2016, when the program, newly expanded to four mobile cafeteria buses, served 14,459 meals from one end of Hawkins County to the other.

As the program prepares to launch its 12th summer of service later this month, Of One Accord Director Sheldon Livesay said he anticipates that the demand will only continue to grow.

“We have many low-income families in Hawkins County, and children get used to eating at school with the free and reduced lunch program,” Livesay told the Times-News on Tuesday. “Every penny is directed toward the light bill, paying rent, keeping gas in the car. When the school year ends, parents have three, four, or five kids coming home for the summer. All of a sudden, they’re burdened with the cost of buying food to feed these kids, and that can sometimes be the difference between paying other bills.

“That’s what the Lunch Box program is for. First, we want to do our best to make sure no child goes hungry while they’re home for summer break. And we also want to help offset some of the financial burden for our low-income families.”

There is no income requirement to eat at the Lunch Box, and all children 18 and under are welcome.
