What's greater than our differences? A devotion for June 7, 2014

"There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them. There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. There are different kinds of working, but in all of them and in everyone it is the same God at work." — 1 Corinthians 12:4-6 (NIV)I have to admit that I enjoy people watching. One of my favorite places to do that is in a large, international airport. As I watch, I am continually amazed at the diversity of humanity. The different shades of skin color, the varied heights, the multiplicity of languages — and yet we all have enough similarities that we see each other as fellow human beings. There is much that could (and does) separate us but so much more that connects us to one another. The same is true of the Church in the world. We all have varied gifts to bring and work to do, but we all have received those gifts from and serve the same God. What separates us is less, much less, than what connects us. As we deal with the differences in our common humanity, let us recognize that the God who made us all connects us to that which is greater than what separates us.Prayer: God of all the nations, do not let differences keep us separate from one other. Use us to work together to serve You and to love our neighbor. Amen.Readers are encouraged to submit their own testimonials and prayers, and leaders of all faiths are welcome to submit messages or sermons here by clicking on this link
