Being powerless: Devotion for March 8, 2014

Becky Whitlock • Mar 10, 2014 at 7:56 AM

“And [Jesus] said, ‘I tell you the truth, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.’” — Matthew 18:3 (NIV)In 21st-century America, we see children as a blessing, a gift we’re given. We believe children should be treated with love and tenderness, should be protected and be given a voice. It wasn’t always this way. In first-century Judea, children who weren’t old enough to work were seen as a drain on a family’s meager resources. They were powerless and, if they were orphaned or abandoned, they were unprotected. It is this kind of humbling state that Jesus calls us to. We must recognize our own powerlessness and vulnerability before God. Without God’s love and protection, we cannot enter the kingdom of heaven.Prayer: Holy God, humble us to recognize our powerlessness and vulnerability without You. Give us faith to turn to You for love and protection. Amen.Readers are encouraged to submit their own testimonials and prayers, and leaders of all faiths are welcome to submit messages or sermons here
