A touch of romance: Vintage style

You can add a touch of romance to your home year round with vintage collections. Everything doesn’t have to be all girly-girly. Subtle romance can be achieved here and there with just a few vintage collectibles.

Collections are fun to gather, and they don’t have to break the bank. You can stop with a few, or add to your collection long term. An added plus, they can be a suggestion for a gift-giving occasion when we are asked (*wink*). Here are some ideas for romantic collections:

Vintage Perfume Bottles/Atomizers: A grouping of old perfume bottles and atomizers can add romance to any room. Display them on a mirrored tray for added sparkle. On a dressing table, these can look great in a group of like colors, such as all clear glass, or shades of pink, but are equally impressive in a hodgepodge of colors and styles.

Ornate Old Frames: Display old family photos in a collection of ornate flea market frames. Another idea is to display several ornate frames (without glass) in a pleasing arrangement on a wall, or prop them against the wall on a shelf as a backdrop to pretty collectibles.

Linens and Lace: Vintage linens and lace are pretty displayed in stacks on shelves or in wire type baskets. Pretty embroidered and crochet-trimmed linens are getting to be a rarity these days and are very collectible. I have an extensive collection of vintage handmade lace, and I like to display some of these in clear apothecary type jars on open shelves.

Old Clocks: Old clocks are a popular item to collect. They look amazing displayed in groups. Clocks with jewels or rhinestones are especially sought after for displays.

Mirrors: Antique mirrors add light and instant vintage romance to a wall. For groupings, try a few framed wall mirrors full of patina, or frameless etched mirrors. Vintage hand mirrors on a dressing table, or arranged in a grouping on a bathroom wall adds romantic charm.

Vintage Postcards and Books: Place pretty vintage postcards here and there: tucked in the inside edge of a picture frame, into an old metal flower frog, or clipped to a lamp shade. There are lots of postcard display ideas on Pinterest. A stack of vintage hardback novels and poetry books in the same color theme looks great on a shelf or side table.

Vintage Jewelry: Romantic vintage jewelry should be showcased. A collection of rhinestone brooches can be pinned to a velvet throw pillow, or placed in a glass display. I have an old glass and brass tabletop curio in which I display my clear rhinestone jewelry collection.

If you have a romantic vintage collection, I’d love to hear about it. Or snap a pic and share it via e-mail. You can email me at melissabaskette@embarqmail.com
