What are your thoughts on ETSU’s rising tuition costs?

It’s another year and yet another hefty tuition increase in the works for students attending East Tennessee State University. The Tennessee Board of Regents is expected to vote on a recommended 4.6 percent increase in tuition/maintenance fees at ETSU later this month. But as Press Assistant News Editor Rex Barber reported in Thursday’s paper, that’s only part of the tuition hike students can expect to see in the fall. The total fee increase, which includes the required fees approved earlier this year by TBR, is 7.8 percent for ETSU. That includes a $125 increase in athletic fees (to help fund the return of football) per student each semester. If the latest increase is approved by the TBR on June 21, the annual cost for a student at ETSU taking 15 hours of classes a semester will be $7,543. As we’ve said on this page many times before, Tennessee has reached a tipping point when it comes to the costs of earning a college degree. And while Tennessee isn’t obligated to provide a free higher education to its residents, it should at least attempt to keep the cost of a college education affordable.
