Abingdon woman valedictorian of James Madison University's class of 2013

Katherine Elaine Brown of Abingdon, Va., is valedictorian of James Madison University’s Class of 2013.Brown Katherine is a mathematics major and secondary education minor. She graduated summa cum laude with a perfect 4.0 grade point average. She is a member of Phi Kappa Phi and received the Dean’s Outstanding Senior Recognition Award in the Mathematics and Statistics Department; Highest Academic Achievement Award; Faculty Award; National Council of Mathematics Teachers Scholarship (NCMT); Virginia Council of Mathematics Teachers Scholarship; the Ikenberry Award, which is presented to an outstanding graduating senior in the Mathematics and Statistics Department ; and the Judith R. Hoffman Award, which is presented to a student who plans to make a career in science or mathematics.Brown was a James Madison University Student Ambassador and spent more than 600 hours tutoring in the Mathematics and Statistics Department Learning Center.She is presently continuing graduate studies at James Madison University. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Michael Brown of Abingdon, and the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ben Beasley of Richmond, Va., and great-granddaughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Clay Arwood, formerly of Pattonsville in Scott County, Va.
