Girls on the Run of Northeast Tennessee is a nonprofit organization that aims to inspire girls to be joyful, healthy and confident using a fun, experience-based curriculum that creatively integrates running.
Participation is not limited to girls and coaches in the program. The 5K Color Splash and Junior Color Splash is for everyone, and others in the community are encouraged to register or come as spectators. You can register for both the 5K Color Splash and Junior Color Splash online at www.stronggirlsrun.com or on-site the day of the race (come early to register).
Jessica Thomas, co-director of Girls on the Run, said the group invites anyone interested in running or walking to come out on May 19.
“It is amazing to see everyone come out on race day to support these girls in achieving their goal of 3.1 miles,” Thomas said. “Whether you are running in the race or cheering the girls on, family, friends and community support is enormously important to these girls and their families who trained so hard to do this.”
The “color splash” portion of the 5K and Junior Race includes spectator participation. This recent colorful addition is another way of showing success for the girls in the program and all runners. When participants reach a certain point in the race, volunteers will throw colored powder on the runners’ race-day T-shirts. Face painting also will add color to the day.
The event promises to be an enjoyable one as local vendors and citizens come together to celebrate the journey completed by these girls during the 12-week after-school program. The program helps inspire girls to go above and beyond their circumstances through training in three categories: “All About Me,” “Building My Team” and “Community Begins with Me.”
There are several local Girls on the Run programs around the Tri-Cities area, including locations in Carter, Sullivan, Washington (Tenn.) and Unicoi counties. Parent or community volunteers lead the teams of girls.
All local Girls on the Run programs come together to demonstrate the benefits of the Girls on the Run of Northeast Tennessee council. The council comprises all of the Girls on the Run programs in the area.
“It should be a fun day with the Color Splash, T-shirts, face painting, Junior Color Splash and people lined up to support the 5K participants cross the finish line,” Thomas said.
