ETSU's Dr. Jesse Graves to speak at Youth Poetry Contest reception

JOHNSON CITY — Dr. Jesse Graves, an assistant professor in East Tennessee State University’s Department of Literature and Language, will be the guest speaker at a reception honoring the winners of the Youth Poetry Contest at 3:30 p.m., Monday, April 8, in the Johnson City Public Library.

Graves, the recipient of the 2012 New Faculty Award from the ETSU College of Arts and Sciences, is the recipient of the Appalachian Writers Association’s Book of the Year Award in poetry for his first poetry collection, “Tennessee Landscape With Blighted Pine.”

He also won the Weatherford Award for poetry, presented to him by Berea College and the Appalachian Studies Association.

The Youth Poetry Contest is sponsored by the Monday Club of Johnson City and the General Federation of Women’s Clubs (GFWC), District One, State of Tennessee.

More than 90 students from 18 area schools entered the poetry contest, with four of the contest winners also gaining recognition at the GFWC meeting in early March.
