A fun and informational, family-friendly event is coming to the area on Saturday, March 23, at Surgoinsville Middle School. And members of the community are invited to attend.

There is something for students of all ages and their family members at this multi-purpose Family Fair, which will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

This first-year family event is a product of the combined efforts of several departments within Hawkins County Schools, including the departments of Family Engagement, School Coordinated Health, and Family Resource.

"The goal of the Family Fair is to provide a forum for parents and families to exchange information in an atmosphere that is friendly and fun," explained Michelle Harless, the family and community engagement coordinator for Hawkins County Schools.

There will be over 50 exhibitors and organizations set up throughout Surgoinsville Middle School to provide family members and students with resourceful information about programs that will benefit children and youth.

A variety of programs will be represented, including summer programs and camps, academic initiatives, safety programs, proper nutrition skills and children’s clubs.

In addition, children can enjoy Funville inflatables, face painting, balloon animals, fire truck and rescue squad vehicles on display, a petting zoo and Mayfield ice cream.

"We wanted to have a way to provide families the opportunity to meet with organizations and/or agencies that benefit the total child - academically, socially, physically and emotionally. Having an event like this benefits the family unit which, in turn, benefits the child academically," said Harless.

Kelly’s Heroes will provide entertainment, with a karate presentation, and You Should Be Dancing from Rogersville will be showcasing different forms of dance.

The Family Fair is a free event sponsored by Hawkins County Schools, United Healthcare, Mayfield Ice Cream, and Food City. It is open to everyone in the community, regardless of where children attend school.

The family event will be held from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m., Saturday, March 23, at Surgoinsville Middle School. Additional parking will be available at Surgoinsville Elementary School.
