The University of Kentucky Wind Symphony will perform a free concert Wednesday in Kingsport.

The concert will begin at 7 p.m., in the theater at Ross N. Robinson Middle School, Jessee Street.

The University of Kentucky Wind Ensemble is under the direction of John Cody Birdwell and consists of the finest wind and percussion performers in the School of Music.

As the centerpiece of a band program, which has served the commonwealth of Kentucky for more than 100 years, the Wind Symphony (formerly the UK Wind Ensemble) continues a tradition of professional-level performances given free of charge to appreciative audiences.

The Wind Symphony has performed at the College Band Directors National Association National Conference (CBDNA) in Athens, Ga., and Minneapolis, Minn., the CBDNA Southern Division Conferences in Biloxi, Miss., and Greensboro, N.C., and the Kentucky Music Educators Association Conference held annually in Louisville.

Most recently, the UK Wind Ensemble performed at the 2006 CBDNA Southern Division Conference in Nashville.

In the summer of 2008 the Wind Symphony toured the People's Republic of China and performed in Shanghai, Beijing, and other venues in celebration of China's hosting of the Olympic games. They have been invited to perform at the National College Band Director’s National Association Convention in Greensboro, N.C., and will stop in Kingsport on their way for this performance.
