LEBANON, Va. — The Lebanon High School Art Department will present “This Blood Runs Deep,” a photography exhibition showcasing the work of art students. An opening reception will be held in the lobby of Lebanon High School from 5 to 7 p.m., March 15. The exhibition will be open to the public, and prints of the photos will be available to order.
Students invited local coal miners into the classroom for a one-on-one interview and photography session. They were able to capture natural photographs while students engaged in a conversation about the day-to-day life and culture of coal miners. Several coal miners, as well as the Dickenson/Russell Coal Mine Rescue Team, were involved.
The funding for this project came from a grant from CEDAR of Virginia Inc. (Coal Education Development and Resources). CEDAR of Virginia Inc. is an all-volunteer, non-profit corporation whose mission is to facilitate the increase in knowledge and understanding of the many benefits the coal industry provides in our daily lives by providing financial and educational resources to local teachers and students. The grant encourages teachers to complete a “Coal Study Unit” focusing on one aspect of the current coal industry.
