staff report • Feb 13, 2013 at 9:04 AM

Kingsport ARTS will present its ART We Talented and Arts4Kids workshops this week, focusing on playwriting and acting.

The ART We Talented workshop, for children 18 months to 5 years old, will be held from 10 to 11 a.m., Thursday, Feb. 14 in Room 230 of the Kingsport Renaissance Center, 1200 E. Center St. The cost is $5.

Using a variety of props and costumes, ART We Talented students will create characters and with a partner create a short scene using these characters.

The children also will complete a special Valentine’s Day art project.

The Arts4Kids workshop, for children 6 to 12 years old, will be held from 1 to 3 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 16, in Room 303 of the Kingsport Renaissance Center. The cost is $10.

Renaissance playwrights used many medieval elements and created interludes, school dramas, chronicle plays, narrative poems, problem plays, etc.

Students in both workshops will learn about the Shakespeare/Marlow competition as two different acting troupes performed each playwright's work. They will also look at many elements including tone and texture, the use of language and the well-rounded characters.

Students will write and perform their own short poem/play based on these forms.
