The Healthy Youth Day “Dance Challenge” will take place during homeroom classes. During the challenge students and teachers will participate in a dance routine fitness as they watch a dance video on the smart boards in the classrooms. Students then will attend an interactive assembly where they will learn about nutrition and fitness. Each student will also receive a free healthy snack consisting of yogurt, an apple and water.
Established by a Virginia General Assembly resolution, Virginia Healthy Youth Day is held every January by the VFHY and promotes physical fitness, good nutrition and healthy lifestyles for Virginia’s children. More than 5,600 children are expected to participate in Virginia Healthy Youth Day, with activities such as walking to school, physical fitness games and nutrition demonstrations from local chefs.
“Virginia Healthy Youth Day reminds us that being physically active should be a year-round goal for Virginia’s young people and not limited to just warm summer days,” says VFHY Executive Director Marty Kilgore.
Virginia First Lady Maureen McDonnell and state Secretary of Health and Human Resources, Dr. Bill Hazel, will kick off Virginia Healthy Youth Day during an hourlong Virginia Healthy Youth Day event on the lawn of the State Capitol on Thursday, Jan. 17. In addition to the celebration at the State Capitol, VFHY is sponsoring 20 other major Virginia Healthy Youth Day events across the state.
Established by the Virginia General Assembly in 1999, the Virginia Foundation for Healthy Youth is responsible for statewide efforts to prevent and reduce youth tobacco use and childhood obesity. Since the foundation began its work in 2001, high school smoking in Virginia has been cut by a third and the number of middle school smokers has dropped by more than 65 percent.
