Kilgore Fort is featured on new Scott ornaments

GATE CITY — The Scott County Chamber of Commerce is set to ring in the holiday season once again now that its annual Christmas ornaments are available for purchase.

The 2012 ornament features a rendering of the historic Kilgore Fort House, which is located off Highway 71 near Nickelsville.

Scott County Chamber of Commerce Secretary Penny Horton said the ornaments are currently on sale for $8.95 at Quick Stop Markets in Gate City and Weber City.

The proceeds, Horton said, are used to help fund the Chamber’s work throughout the year.

“This is one of the fund-raisers for the Chamber,” Horton said. “Any money we raise goes to our operations.”

Unlike in years past, Horton said the 2012 version of the ornament is going on sale later than usual due to an error found when the original shipment of ornaments was received last week.

“We usually like to have them by Thanksgiving,” Horton said. “However, this year they were a couple of weeks late due to an issue with the wording on the ornament, but we’ve got them out there now and they are ready to go.”

The 14th version of the ornament features the Kilgore Fort, which was built in 1790 on the banks of Copper Creek. The fort house is the only one that is still standing along the portion of the Wilderness Road that stretches from Castlewood to Cumberland Gap.

The fort was restored in the early 1970s and is owned by Glen and Linda Broadwater.

Horton said the Chamber’s ornament committee chose the fort because of its historical significance.

“The committee tries to pick things that are popular and would appeal to a large number of people,” Horton said. “So we try to pick attractions and buildings and things that reflect not only the history, but the beauty of the county.”

Although Christmas is just over a week away, Horton said the nearly 300 ornaments that were ordered are expected to sell quickly.

“Over the past few years, people have learned that these are collectible, and we only have them one time,” Horton said.

“Once they start collecting them, we have people who are waiting each year for them to come in.”

Ornaments can also be purchased directly from the Chamber of Commerce. For more information, contact the Scott County Chamber at (276) 386-2525.
