Flute ensemble concert to aid homeless ministry

staff report • Nov 29, 2012 at 10:09 AM

JOHNSON CITY — Cambia Flute Ensemble, the region’s premier flute quartet, will present a Christmas benefit concert at 2:30 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 9, at First United Methodist Church, 900 Spring St., in Johnson City.

All proceeds will benefit the Interfaith Hospitality Networks of Greater Johnson City and Greater Kingsport. Suggested donation will be $10 at the door.

The Interfaith Hospitality Networks of Greater Johnson City and of Greater Kingsport provide a network of churches and community agencies to promote a community response for homeless families with children.

In particular, this response provides an opportunity for homeless families to remain together as a family while addressing the challenges that confront them in obtaining housing.

These families receive counseling, services and opportunities on issues related to each family’s specific needs. An organized coalition of community churches provide temporary food and shelter for families involved in the Network.

Cambia members Dana Bellino, Eileen Butler, Elisa Wardeska and Emily Webb perform throughout the region as soloists, as well as with the Johnson City Symphony Orchestra and Kingsport’s Symphony of the Mountains.

Formed in 2009, Cambia is fast gaining the reputation for combining a top-caliber performance of challenging and engaging music, combined with an evident camaraderie and sense of humor between its members and the audience.

Cambia’s repertoire encompasses a broad range of musical genres, including music written specifically for flute ensembles as well as transcriptions and arrangements for other instruments. Their music features added depth and breadth of sound by using the piccolo, alto and bass flutes, in combination with the more familiar concert flute.

Featured on the concert will be seasonal favorites, both old and new, including selections from “The Nutcracker Suite,” “The Twelve Days of Christmas,” “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” and many others. Guest flutist Suzanne Gryzch will join Cambia for the Christmas concert festivities.

Not just your typical flute ensemble, Cambia promises to deliver a concert that is fun and entertaining for all ages.
