Free concert kicks off 41st Home Craft Days Festival

BIG STONE GAP — Musician Brian Bowers will host workshops in autoharp and children’s storytelling as part of this weekend’s Home Craft Days Festival in Big Stone Gap.

Mountain Empire Community College will host the 41st annual festival beginning with a free concert at 6 p.m. Friday in the Phillips-Taylor Goodloe Center featuring Bowers, Cajun Country Revival, Dan and Robin Kessinger, Adam Hager, Compton and Newberry, and Dale Jett and Hello Stranger.

Bowers will host an autoharp workshop from 1 to 3:30 p.m. Friday in Phillips-Taylor Hall’s Room 232. The registration fee is $30. For more information or to register contact Sue Ella Boatwright-Wells at (276) 523-7489 or sboatright@mecc.edu.

Bowers will also conduct a combined children’s storytelling and autoharp workshop from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Saturday in Godwin Hall’s Room 155. The workshop is free, and no preregistration is required.

From 9 a.m. through 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, the campus will be packed with regional crafts, craft demonstrations, music, food and more. A full schedule of performers is available at www.homecraftdays.org.

Parking and shuttles for the festival will be offered at five locations in Big Stone Gap. Shuttle rides are $1 per person at boarding. Locations are Union High School, curbside on Wood Avenue in front of Food City, curbside at the municipal parking lot behind the federal courthouse/U.S. Post Office, Country Inn and Comfort Inn.

One of the most popular festivals in the region, Home Craft Days features musicians and artisans from across Southwest Virginia, East Tennessee and Eastern Kentucky. Demonstrations will include weaving, pottery making, grist milling, wood crafting, basket weaving, broom making, quilting and tatting.
