His fun-loving, creative staff design one-of-a-kind West Stone Chompers T-shirts, take educational trips together, and even entered and won the Chili Cookoff Contest at Fun Fest a few years back. They even donned over-biting beaver teeth and beaver costumes. But it’s not all fun and games at 1105 West Stone Drive, because good oral hygiene is a serious matter.
"What you do at home every day, brushing and flossing, complemented with coming to see us for a checkup and cleaning regularly really contributes to your overall health." said Dr. Dan Dietrich, DDS.
His long-time staff of two dental hygienists and four registered dental assistants make up his extended family and reflect Dietrich’s respectful and caring attitude toward every patient.
"You have to relate one-on-one and build trusting relationships, and my staff members really enjoy doing that. We try to make the experience pleasant. We listen to a patient’s concerns. We make them as comfortable as possible. The assistants and hygienists in my office do a wonderful job at that," he said proudly.
Dietrich’s personal roots run deep in the hills of Tennessee. His mother was born in Bristol and his father moved here at the age of 10 and, after the Navy, worked at Eastman for 43 years, making Dietrich very much a child of Kingsport.
He attended Dobyns-Bennett and knew his future wife in junior high school, but it wasn’t until Dee Dee’s mom played matchmaker during Christmas break of their sophomore year of college that the two started dating. The couple got married after Dietrich’s first year at UT School of Dentistry in Memphis and decided to return to Kingsport after graduation.
"It’s just a great place to live and raise a family. It has a lot to offer. I enjoy visiting bigger cities, but I always love coming home," Dietrich said smiling.
The Dietrichs have two children, Andy, who co-owns Champion Chevrolet in Johnson City and lives nearby with his wife and children; and Lauren, who lives with her husband and children in Spartanburg, S.C. They have also been blessed with six grandchildren.
"We’re so fortunate that we get to spend time with the grandkids and watch them grow," he beamed.
Dr. Dietrich believes in giving back to the community that he loves, having spent countless hours as a volunteer with the United Way, Boy Scouts, and youth sports. He has served as a volunteer dentist and board member for Friends in Need Health Center and as a board member for the Grandfather Home for Children in Banner Elk, N.C. He’s a Sunday school teacher at First Presbyterian Church, as well as an elder, deacon and contributor to numerous committees.
"I think it is important to give whatever we can. And, honestly, I feel I get more out of what I do than those I try to help," Dietrich modestly said.
Practicing at his state-of-the-art facility, located in the Stone Drive Doctor’s Building at 1105 West Stone Drive, Dietrich notes that tooth-colored materials used for esthetic restorations, such as veneers, crowns and fillings, improve every year. Enhanced techniques in digital intra-oral and panoramic x-rays provide Dietrich with better diagnostic capabilities because of sharper and better imaging and the capacity to manipulate the image.
"It takes a clearer, more accurate image with less radiation than the standard x-ray and it’s in your record instantaneously. We also use intra-oral cameras that can magnify 30 to 50 times so we can detect small cracks and other problems you might have with your teeth . We can show you on a monitor to help you better understand what is going on in your mouth," Dietrich said.
Dr. Dietrich’s mission statement sums up his practice’s philosophy quite well. Its mission is "to serve and support:
- our patients from infancy through adulthood with superior dental treatment delivered with a "we care" attitude,
- our patients and community with education about methods of good oral hygiene and the necessity of oral health for total body health,
- each other in order to achieve personal and professional satisfaction while working in a friendly, efficient and impeccably clean office."
