KINGSPORT — U.S. Rep. Phil Roe’s perfect record stayed intact Monday.

Roe, R-Tenn., again received the U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s Spirit of Enterprise Award for his 93 percent pro-business voting record in Congress in 2017.

House members were scored on 14 votes, including votes on tax reform legislation, access to Medicare, and lawsuit abuse. Various votes in support of small businesses were also scored.

“Our economy is thriving for that. And congressman, you are a great help to that,” Moore Hallmark of the Southeast Region of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce told about 100 business and government leaders at a Kingsport Chamber luncheon.

Roe, in his remarks about what Congress is doing now, touted House Speaker Paul Ryan’s organization of working groups on tax cuts, veterans issues and regulatory reform after President Donald Trump’s 2016 election victory.

“When (Trump) was sworn in, the House was ready to go,” Roe insisted.

This year, said Roe, Congress is passing more appropriations bills.

“This particular Congress has been the most bipartisan in over 20 years because of the bills we have passed together, although you wouldn’t know that by watching the news,” Roe noted.

At 18 months with Trump in the White House and Republicans in control of Congress, Roe pointed out the economy has picked up considerably.

“There are more job openings than there are people looking for a job. … If you are out there competing in an open market system, wages will rise. … I see a bright horizon,” Roe stressed.

As for Trump’s announced tariffs, Roe said he’s done two roundtable discussions with business leaders in the 1st Congressional District and called the tariffs impact a mixed bag.

“Some businesses it helps, and some businesses it hurts,” Roe said of the tariffs. “I certainly don’t think we’ve seen the end of this, but I hope it comes soon.”

Roe will face Democrat Marty Olsen in the November general election.
