Since she began seeing patients on August 6, Dr. Carter says she’s looking forward to getting to know and care for the patients and families of Mountain Region’s practice in Gate City, Va.
“Not only do the staff make me feel like family, we work together to make sure our patients feel that way,” Dr. Carter said. “I really love getting to know patients. I’m a good listener and truly care. At Mountain Region, we strive to make sure our patients feel they are heard.”
Dr. Carter says one of her greatest passions is helping patients become and stay healthy, “Obviously I want to take care of people when they’re not feeling well but I really like preventive medicine, helping patients understand how a healthy diet, exercise and other ways can help prevent medical conditions that cause lower quality of life and a shorter lifespan.”
She said the key to improving and maintaining your health is to only take medications that you need because less is better, and a healthy diet and exercise can improve your mental, physical and emotional health, and overall quality of life. Dr. Carter also says preventive screenings are important to maintain your health including, but not limited to, having a colonoscopy, Pap smear and cholesterol screenings to help prevent some common issues.
While still in medical school, Dr. Carter said she decided to do family medicine. “I like a little bit of everything and it allows me to see a mixture of adult and pediatric patients,” she said. She added the decision of becoming a doctor was easy. “I love to work with people and I've always had an interest in science and math. It’s challenging and will never get boring,” she said. She is certified by the American Board of Family Medicine.
Dr. Carter completed her medical training at Ross University School of Medicine. On her way to becoming a physician, she acquired her undergraduate degree from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, a master’s degree in hospital business administration from Davenport University in Grand Rapids, Mich., to build an understanding of the business management side of health care. “It really helped me become aware of the importance of every level of staff and helped me understand that open communication helps build a good work environment,” she said. “The extra benefit is that it taught me professionalism, which helped when I was chief resident during my last year of residency.”
Away from work, she spends time with her husband and two children, ages 5 and 3. They enjoy cooking, traveling, being outdoors and watching football. A native of Kingsport, Dr. Carter says her mom’s veggie burger is still one of her favorites to prepare.
At the gym, she keeps fit with hip hop, pilates and aerobics and enjoys hiking area trails. And when it comes to vacation, the Carters travel to a different location every time so they and their son and daughter are exposed to different areas and cultures.
